Cup O’ Blue

Original photos that grace each show page are taken at various coffee houses around Bellingham, Washington by the show’s hostess. They represent a nice visit, with an old friend, over a cup of coffee—that same warm feeling you get listening to the Playhouse.  For the tech geeks, Shannon (aka. Boosie) took the photos between 2011-13 using the “negative” photo effect feature with her Nokia and LG cell phones.

Shows

The Playhouse Classic Blues radio show features songs from the classic era of 1920-70, covering the first 50 years of recorded Blues. Hosted by that “voice vixen” Boosie.  B also hosted “The New Americana Hour” with The SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention co-founder Jonathan Winter.

History

When the SPARK Museum owned the KMRE low-power community radio license, 2005-18, each hour was dedicated to a specific genre and decade to showcase their massive collection of classic wooden-cased radios and recorded music.  The station was known for its daytime music block “Golden Era” of old timey music which won the hearts of many locals.
From 2011-18, at 10:00 p.m. every Saturday night, Bossie’s Playhouse Classic Blues took over the airwaves, broadcasting online and over the air to all 85,000 people in the Bellingham city core.  Did they know what hit them? No, but the blues are like that, so it’s alright.
In 2016 Boosie moved to KXAX Radio, 94.9 offering an interview program, “Bellingham Art Beat”.  In this half-hour series, she interviews Western Washington artists about their motivation and creative vision using a five-question format.  The series was a recipient of the 2017 Mayor’s Arts Award.
In 2018, SPARK sold the community broadcasting license to some volunteer ‘hamsters.  The volunteers added locally produced talk shows focused on area businesses and events to an updated folk, jazz, and classic rock music format. You can learn more about the new station at their website KMRE.org.
